From 1755 onwards, Kant held lectures and pursued his university career. These middle years of his life coincided with a period of significant social change in Königsberg. In 1758, during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), East Prussia was occupied by troops of the Russian empire, among whom were many German-Baltic officers. During this time, social life flourished in Königsberg, which had previously been strictly religiously oriented.
Kant gained access to the esteemed circles of the city and was considered a witty and entertaining guest. He dressed elegantly, played billiards and cards, and went on social excursions in the surrounding area. Many of his new friends remained by his side over the coming decades. Kant was at the centre of life.
