300 years ago, on 22nd April 1724, Immanuel Kant was born in Königsberg. Kant revolutionised philosophy: his "Critique of Pure Reason" and his "categorical imperative" continue to shape our thinking today. He formulated the motto of the Enlightenment era: " Have courage to use your own reason!"
But who was this famous figure? Kant lived in a time of change in Europe, yet led a quiet life. He founded a cosmopolitan philosophy but rarely left his hometown. He spent over 70 of his nearly 80 years of life in the East Prussian city of Königsberg (now Russian Kaliningrad).
This exhibition does not address Kant's philosophy, but his life in Königsberg through unique objects, some of which are being shown publicly for the first time. At the same time, it offers a preview of the permanent exhibition that will open in 2025 on Kant and his philosophy, with a behind-the-scenes look: How do you bring philosophy into the museum? Which of Kant's ideas are particularly relevant today? Which ones are worth criticising?
