For forty years, Kant worked as a lecturer at the University of Königsberg. This was not a matter of course, as many Enlightenment thinkers and philosophers during Kant’s time earned their living as freelance writers.
Kant had to wait a long time before he reached his career goal. In 1770, at the age of 44, he became "Professor of Logic and Metaphysics" and received a fixed salary. He turned down other, more lucrative offers in order to stay in Königsberg.
Kant was a diligent and conscientious teacher, but he often found the administrative work in the Senate to be tedious. Kant was very popular among his students. His pedagogical goal was for his students to practise independent thinking and thus learn to philosophise for themselves.
