Animals and plants in East Prussia – numerous and diverse

East Prussia lies on the border of two climate zones – the West Atlantic one with rather mild temperatures and the East Continental one with short hot summers and long cold winters. Therefore, several boundaries of animals and plants run through the country. The deciduous forest that once dominated in the west merges into a mixed forest region typical for the east.

The climate often also influences growth: roebucks, for example, develop stronger antlers here than further west.

Since the Middle Ages, land use has spread from the west and destroyed the previously closed forest zone. An open cultural landscape was created, especially on clay and loamy soils of great agricultural value. However, the comparatively small population and several large forests still leave room for many plants and animals, including rarer species. This abundance and the special features of the landscape, such as the interplay of sea, lakes, land and clouds, still inspire today.
