Welcome to the East Prussian State Museum with its Baltic German Section and the Luneburg Brewery Museum

For centuries the former province of East Prussia was a part of Prussian and, later, German history. Today the region belongs to Russia, Poland and Lithuania. From 1945 to 1948 almost all German people had to leave their ancestral homes. It is thanks to their initiative that already in 1953 the work was begun here in Luneburg to preserve, research and share the rich cultural history of the province by exhibiting it in a museum. Since 1987 this work has been supported financially by the Federal Government and the State of Lower Saxony pursuant on a legal basis.

The museum’s mission is to give as complete and consistent a presentation as possible of East Prussia’s history, culture and landscape. The province’s name and borders were subject to many changes in the course of its history. The museum’s exhibitions and collections cover all places and regions that were at one time or another a part of the country that used to be the Prussian province of East Prussia in the German Empire.

Another part of the museum’s mission is to present the cultural history of the Baltic Germans, the German-speaking people up to 1939 in what are today the Republics of Estonia and Latvia. The target region of our museum is therefore about four times the size of Lower Saxony and is divided between five different states.

The amicable cooperation with partners from these countries through joint exhibitions, study trips and other cultural projects is an essential part of the museum's work. Our common history can thus build bridges to promote reconciliation, close exchange and getting to know each other better.

The museum is partly located on the site of the former Luneburg Kronen brewery. In its listed brewhouse we also present to the public one of the most important brewery museums in northern Germany.
