For thousands of years amber has inspired people to create things. In the Stone Age amber was often processed into pearls and amulets. Figures had human or animal-like traits. With advanced possibilities, reliefs and three-dimensional figures were created in ancient times. Cutting and carving were important work processes.
From the 14th century onwards amber once again came into fashion. Especially prayer chains were in demand. Individual artists made figures and small vessels, mostly for church use.
Since the Renaissance, craftsmen have refined their techniques with grinding and engraving. Small boxes and furniture are stuck with amber. This is how great amber works were created. World famous is the Amber Room, whose walls are completely decorated with carved amber. As from the end of the 19th century amber jewellery could be produced much more cheaply with pressed amber. Today amber craftwork and jewellery are becoming modern again.
